Last night, I caught the tail end of The Apprentice.


It was the usual mess of boardroom chaos, finger-pointing and enough ego to sink a ship. What struck me, though, is that none of the contestants were actually incompetent. They’ve all got skills, but the structure pits them against each other.

 

It’s a game of survival, not success. And it’s eerily similar to how many businesses function.


But there’s another TV programme we can learn from: the wholesome chaos of Challenge Anneka (showing my age there!). Here, people don’t claw for personal credit, they come together, roll up their sleeves and get things done. They make things happen. Expectations aren’t just met; they’re blown out of the water. And it all happens because collaboration is the rule, not the exception.

The Problem With Traditional Business Hierarchies

Let’s be honest, most workplaces aren’t designed for agility. They’re rigid. Top-down management or, at best, bottom-up suggestions (often ignored) where success is typically quantified in promotions, raises or perks for the individual.


But here’s the thing: when people are focused on protecting their piece of the pie, collaboration tends to be forgotten. New employees are often seen as students rather than contributors. Got a fresh idea or different approach? Be prepared for the side-eye. Worse, if you’re ‘too’ good, you might be seen as a threat. It’s like teaching someone to drive but never letting them behind the wheel.

What if businesses said (and actually meant!): “We’re all in this together”? Sure, owners have more skin in the game, but what if success wasn’t just about promotions or monetary gain for the top brass? Lessons From a Non-Traditional Leader

I once worked for a big organisation where my second-tier manager stood out like a sore thumb. He was scruffy, eccentric and definitely not the polished corporate type. But guess what? He was brilliant. Even some twenty years later, myself and other former colleagues still call him the best they ever worked with.


And guess what? His team out performed all the adjacent ones.

 

Why? He didn’t pretend to have all the answers. He admitted his weaknesses, praised others for their strengths and trusted his team to rise to the occasion. When someone wasn’t in the right role, he helped them find their niche instead of squeezing them into a job that didn’t fit. He wasn’t interested in promotions, which ironically, made him the kind of leader people wanted to follow.


His secret?


He was human. And humble.

Creating Spaces Where Collaboration Can Thrive

Real teamwork and collaboration can be tricky within the confines of a traditional office or workshop, especially when an established culture exists.
